The pair appeared on SNL together in December 2022, with the former serving as host and the latter as musical guest.
The film will be directed by Lawrence Lamont and the script will be written by Syreeta Singleton.
The plot details for the film are unknown, but Rae and Sara Diya Rastogi will produce it through Hoorae.
The film grew out of a collaboration pact between ColorCreative and Columbia Pictures intended to find and nurture diverse screenwriters so they can develop and pitch original ideas for their first studio feature film.
Sza has landed a new movie according to a Friday report from Deadline; seen at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards
She and Keke Palmer are set to co-star in a buddy comedy produced by Issa Rae
The film will mark the acting debut of the Kill Bill singer, who had been considering several opportunities but ultimately wanted to work with the actress again.
Though this will be her film debut, she previously appeared on the soundtrack to Black Panther on a Kendrick Lamar song titled “All the Stars” and her music videos have often had a cinematic quality to them.
Her co-star has seen her profile rise in recent years thanks to a star-making turn in Jordan Peele’s Nope, but she first caught the world’s attention with her performance in Akeelah and the Bee.
Many are familiar with her television work such as the Nickelodeon show True Jackson, VP, or Fox’s Scream Queens.
She also stepped behind the camera. Big Boss, a short film that accompanied an album of the same name, was her directorial debut and was released in May 2023.
That film premiered on KeyTV, a digital network she founded that features other content written, produced and directed by her. She also has a new podcast through Wondery/Amazon called Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.
For her television work, she received two Emmys, one in 2021 for Turnt Up With The Taylors, a series she created, and the other for Outstanding Host For A Game Show. The latter award, which came for her work on the Password reboot, was the first time a black woman had received that award.
Her future onscreen partner is similarly recognized, with an Oscar nomination for her contribution to the Black Panther soundtrack and four Grammy wins. Her major label debut, Ctrl, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, second on the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and third on the Billboard 200 Chart.
The film’s director also brings a strong background in music. Along with directing Rap Sh!t, he has also got behind the camera for music videos for Snoop Dogg, Nas, Kanye West, J. Cole and Big Sean. A video for the latter won two awards: Best Video of the Year from BET and Best Hip Hop Video from MTV.

Rae will produce the untitled buddy comedy through her company Hoorae; seen in March
The film's announcement comes not long after Rap Sh! t's cancellation after two seasons, which the creator of Insecure characterized as stories from Black filmmakers as less important
‘It’s already happening. You’re seeing so many Black shows get cancelled, you’re seeing so many executives – especially on the DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] side – get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority,’ the Barbie star said in an interview with Net-a-Porter.
Shelley expressed pessimism about the industry's state because studios seem scared of taking any risk.
‘Now these conglomerate leaders are also making the decisions about Hollywood. Y’all aren’t creative people. Stick to the money. The people that are taking chances are on platforms like TikTok: that’s what’s getting the eyeballs of the youth. So you’re killing your own industry,’ Rae said.
